Subaru Impreza - Specs and Improvements
Subaru introduced the Impreza in the 1993 model year offering this vehicle in four door and five door sedans and a five door station wagon. The name is derived from the Italian word for impressive party or outstanding event. The Impreza was positioned as a sporty driving, utilitarian compact car available with a boxer engine and all-wheel-drive. Imprezas are assembled in Ota and Gunma, Japan and Lafayette, Indiana, USA. They fall into the size category of Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, though their followers consider them much sportier and their value retention is much higher than most of their competition.

Auto writers have long been critical of the Subaru designs for their vehicles, calling them bland and boxy. Even Subaru lovers call their designs "quirky." All of that is changing in 2011 with the acquisition of designer Osamu Namba in 2008. His first iterations of the new Subaru designs begin with the 2011 Impreza. As critics have said, "Subaru has the engineering down, now they are working on the designs for broader appeal to more than just a small, very loyal crowd." The engineering must-haves are in place; all-wheel-drive, boxer engine, great handling and performance. Now they are going to have clean and simple designs so the vehicles have a strong overall presence.

The Impreza sedan will sport stronger lines as it moves away from the present rounded look. Form will follow function, however, and there will no superfluous flourishes. The cars will still be unique so as not to diminish their appeal to their almost-cult following. Osamu Namba says that the new designs will not alienate the "faithful" as they will be more of an "evolution rather than a revolution." Subaru Tecnica International, the sports racing division, began tweaking the Impreza as a rally car racer, introducing the WRX and WRX STi models. These high-performance vehicles are rally competitive the world over. With little or no modifications an STi can be rallied right from the showroom floor. STi is to Subaru what Motorsport (M) Division is to BMW or AMG is to Mercedes Benz or SVT is to Ford Motor Company.

The 2006 Subaru WRX STI - there have been a few changes, mostly for the better. Looks have been changed, especially from the front of the car, giving it a more general appeal.

As all enthusiasts will know they've upped the engince capacity from 2.0 to 2.5 litres and according to Subaru this was not only to increase performance but the torque makes the overall driveability in most conditions that much better. For the un-initiated: STI stands for Subaru Technica International, which is the high-performance and motorsports division of Fuji Heavy Industries. What this ultimately means is that when driving an STI you are driving a car bred for racing, in rallies.

The WRX STI receives it's motorsports technology straight from the Subaru World Rally Championship. The 206 kW converts to about 300 horsepower and the 392 Nm of torque to 300 lb-ft; that added to the Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel-drive means some serious power and stability. You can really throw this car into corners and it sticks to the road. It also means that you can get from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.0 seconds.

Which Is The Better Buy...

Subaru Wrx Sti Or The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution?

Subaru Wrx Sti Or The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution?
One of the hardest decisions is deciding to buy a WRX STI or a Lancer Evolution. Both of the cars are very similar and are fantastic. The new MR edition (Mitsubishi Racing) has created a more competition for the WRX this year. The MR edition is not as quite as nice as the British version that sports 342 HP and a 60 thousand dollar price tag but it is better than last years Evolution. The new Lancer has 5 more ponies than last years model and has many more features that give the STI a run for its money.

We will start out with the Lancer Evolution MR edition. The lancer starts slightly under $35,000 and has many added benefits from last years Evolution. For starters it has more power because of redesigned airflow to the turbo, something that I believe should have happened a long time ago. Some say the biggest change is the new BBS wheels, the wheel way almost 3 pounds lighter than last years model. Also the true auto enthusiasts will spot the MR edition different with the cool new badging, and around the rear window the impressive "shark teeth" which are vortex generators with the ability to create 35% less lift at 110 mph and helps the wing create more down force by reducing turbulence.

Now for the 2005 Subaru WRX STI, the car just goes to show that Subaru is one tough competitor. When you sit down in the car the first thing you notice is the smaller diameter steering wheel, a smaller wheel creates more of a rally sport feel to the auto. Next is the redesigned helical type front limited slip differential. It does a much better job transferring power to those front wheels for added handling. Next is the braking, the brakes on the WRX have been upgraded via adjustable ABS controller that allows more feedback from the brakes to the driver.

In conclusion both of the cars have almost identical performance numbers with the Mitsubishi coming out slightly I mean slightly ahead. But having only 1000 MR Mitsubishis built will put a dampener on sales. I think this is and will continue to be one of the best rivalries in the import community. So I say let the battle for rally bred street supremacy go, all it will bring is better and better cars by both manufacturers.
